Chestnut in Shell

The humble chestnut has intrigued and mesmerised me in equal measure since my early childhood. I remember playing Conkers in the school yard with my friends. My battered and often fatally cracked ‘champion’, strung precariously on a shoelace, was held aloft for a would-be contender to take his best shot. The winner took all - either I gained another life or he claimed my winning streak.

Sadly, the game has been banned from most schools for Health & Safety concerns.

The horse chestnut is one of the most tactile and beautiful natural objects readily available but so often overlooked. I have attempted to capture the splendour of this natural wonder.

Check out the YouTube video of the making of Horse Chestnut in Shell.
